General Settings
The General Settings page is where you customize your project's appearance, behavior, and personality. These settings control everything from the AI's language and voice to the visual design of your interview page.
Configuration Options#
Project Name#
What it does: The display name shown in the interview header and dashboard.
Example: "Customer Satisfaction Survey" or "Product Discovery Interview"
Best practice: Use a descriptive name that makes it clear what the interview is about.
Product/Service Name#
What it does: Tells the AI what your product or service is called. The AI uses this name naturally in conversation when asking questions or providing context.
Example: If you enter "Acme Analytics", the AI might say, "What motivated you to try Acme Analytics?"
Best practice: Use your actual product or company name so the conversation feels personalized.
Agent Role Description#
What it does: A brief description that shapes the AI's persona and tone during interviews.
Example: "A friendly researcher helping us understand user needs" or "A customer success specialist gathering feedback"
Best practice: Keep it concise (1-2 sentences) and aligned with the tone you want the AI to use.
Start Message#
What it does: The custom greeting that respondents see when they first open the interview. This is their first impression, so make it welcoming and clear.
Example: "Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback! I'm here to learn about your experience with our product."
A great start message sets expectations, is welcoming, and reassures respondents that their time is valued. Avoid being overly formal—conversational tones work best.
Language#
What it does: Sets the language the AI speaks in during the interview. Diaform supports any language.
Example: English, Spanish, French, Japanese, etc.
Best practice: Match the language to your target audience's native language for the best response quality.
Avatar#
What it does: Upload a custom image displayed in the interview header. This could be your company logo, a product icon, or a custom illustration.
Supported formats: PNG, JPG, SVG
Best practice: Use a square image (e.g., 200x200px) for the best appearance.
Background Color#
What it does: Sets the background color of the interview page.
Example: #FFFFFF (white), #F3F4F6 (light gray), or your brand color
Best practice: Choose a neutral or brand-aligned color that doesn't distract from the conversation.
Button Color#
What it does: Sets the accent color for buttons and interactive elements throughout the interview.
Example: #3B82F6 (blue), #10B981 (green), or your brand's primary color
Best practice: Use a color that contrasts well with your background for accessibility.
Audio Output#
What it does: Toggles AI voice responses powered by ElevenLabs text-to-speech. When enabled, the AI reads its messages aloud in addition to displaying them as text.
Use case: Great for accessibility or when you want respondents to multitask while providing feedback.
Note: Voice output works best in quiet environments and with supported browsers (Chrome, Safari, Edge).
Email Collection#
What it does: Toggles a pre-interview email collection screen. When enabled, respondents are prompted to enter their email before the interview starts.
Options: Optional (respondents can skip) or required (can be customized in code if needed).
Where emails appear: In the responses list, CSV exports, and webhook payloads.
For more details, see the Email Collection guide.
Email Collection Message#
What it does: Customize the message shown on the email collection screen.
Character limit: 500 characters
Default message: "Enter your email so we can follow up on your feedback (optional)"
Best practice: Explain why you're collecting the email and reassure respondents it's optional.
Hide Branding#
What it does: Removes the "Powered by Diaform" footer from the interview page.
Availability: pro+ Pro and Business plans only
Use case: Ideal for enterprises or agencies that want a fully white-labeled experience.
Saving Changes#
All changes to General Settings are saved automatically when you click the "Save" button at the bottom of the page. Make sure to publish your project for the changes to be visible to respondents.
Changes to published projects take effect immediately. If you're making major updates, consider unpublishing the project temporarily to avoid confusion for active respondents.
